Translating Poetry: Words Across Cultures and the Page

March 16 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

| $75

Event Navigation

In this three-hour workshop lead by published translator Caroline Goodwin, students will have the opportunity to discuss the joys and challenges of literary translation, working from the language of their choice and translating work into English. We will read examples of how several writers have treated the process as a cross-cultural, creative endeavor, mindful of the value of translation as a vital and essential form of art. Students will workshop a brief piece of their own translations and gain knowledge about resources for the contemporary writer/translator. Caroline Goodwin’s translations have been published in Prism International and Where Words Like Monarchs Fly: A Cross-Generational Anthology of Mexican Poets in Translation. She moved to the Bay Area from Alaska in 1999 to attend Stanford as a Wallace Stegner Fellow in poetry. She holds an MFA from the University of British Columbia where she studied translation with poet and translator George McWhirter. She currently teaches at the Stanford Writer’s Studio, Left Margin Lit, and California College of the Arts.

Pre-registration required by March 8.
